Jewellery for February Birthdays

Those born in February could be either an Aquarius or a Pisces, but both are lucky enough to have the glorious Amethyst as their main birthstone.

If you don’t already have this stunning purple quartz in your gemstone jewellery collection, then you are missing out.  Amethyst is arguably the most famous semi-precious gem on the market, and has been used to adorn royal crown jewels and religious jewellery throughout the ages.

According to Greek mythology, Amethyst was a young virgin who became the object of wrath of the Greek God Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine.  When Amethyst cried out to the Goddess Diana for help, she immediately turned the girl into a white, shimmering stone – quartz.  When Dionysus realised what had happened and felt remorse for his actions, his tears dripped into his goblet of red wine.  The goblet overturned, spilling the red wine all over the white rock, saturating it until it became the purple quartz that is now known as Amethyst.

Because amethyst was associated with wine, it was believed that wearing it prevented drunkenness.  Other legends reflected beliefs that amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick-witted in both battle and business.  In modern times, its benefits include:

  • easing stress and anxiety
  • treating insomnia and warding off nightmares
  • helping people prone to depression and a feeling of melancholy
  • a tonic for headaches, mental illness and concussions
  • a general stone of natural healing
  • being a stone of peace – it calms fears, raises hopes and lifts the spirits
  • promoting internal balance and harmony to bring stability to the individual
