Jewellery for June Birthdays

June babies can fall either under Cancer or Gemini, and their main birthstone isn’t really a stone at all!  What truly makes pearls unique is that they’re the only gemstone made by living creatures.  Pearls are created inside molluscs when they deposit layers of calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant.  Freshwater pearls can take between 1 and 6 years to form; whereas saltwater may take between 5 and 20 years!

Sometimes referred to as the “Queen of Gems,” pearls have been prized since ancient times because of their natural beauty.  Romans and Egyptians used them as early as the 5th Century BC, and there are even earlier records of the Chinese using pearls.

The major religions of Hindu and Islam have a special place for pearls in their history, using pearls as a symbol of purity and perfection.  When pearls became a part of European culture, some countries even passed laws saying that only nobility could wear them.

But they are often overlooked, because of several popular misconceptions:

  • only Grandmothers wear pearls
  • they’re only for formal occasions

Both are totally wrong!  Just look at how stunning these ladies look:

Pearls can be worn by all ages in all colours and lengths.  They can be worn every day to the office or to the shops, as much as they suit an evening outfit.  They can be paired with a suit, a dress or blue jeans.  Gemstones must be cut and polished to bring out their beauty, but pearls need no such treatment to reveal their loveliness!

They are available in so many different colours, sizes and shapes, and they pair beautifully with gems, crystals and metal.  The options are limitless!

The pearls I use in my designs are all cultured freshwater pearls, which means that they are ethically farmed to cause little harm to the environment.  Many people think of ‘cultured pearls’ as ‘fake’ pearls, but this isn’t so.  Cultured pearls are real pearls grown inside real oysters at pearl farms in Japan, Australia, Indonesia, China and many more locations.

As well as Pearls, those born in June can call Moonstone their birthstone too.

Moonstone is one of the more famous gems, and for good reason.  It’s outstandingly beautiful!  It is also legendary as the Traveller’s Stone, being especially protective of those who travel by night or upon the water when the moon is shining.  Frequent travellers should keep one in the glove compartment for safe night driving and as protection against road rage.  It can’t hurt!

Moonstone is said to open the heart to nurturing qualities as well as assisting in the acceptance of love.  It is an excellent crystal for first or new love, and is a comforting talisman if love must be kept a secret.  It was also believed to be able to reunite loved ones who had parted in anger.

Moonstone is also the stone of love and eroticism, stimulating the kundalini energy and carnal desires.  It is the ultimate fertility crystal!  A Moonstone necklace worn during lovemaking at full moon harmonizes the body into the natural lunar cycle.  So don your necklace and get to making love!
