January covers two zodiac signs, that of Capricorn and Aquarius, and the main gemstone for both of these is the beautiful Garnet.
It comes in an array of colours including pink, green, orange, yellow, brown and black, but is most famous for it’s dark red variety. It is often mistaken for ruby, but has been a treasured gem for a long time. Thousands of years ago, red garnet necklaces adorned the necks of Egypt’s pharaohs, and were entombed with their mummified corpses as prized possessions for the afterlife. In ancient Rome, signet rings with carved garnets were used to stamp the wax that secured important documents. The term carbuncle was often used in ancient times to refer to red garnets, and carbuncle was thought to be one of the four precious stones given to King Solomon by God!
Not only is it beautiful, garnet is also said to posses some powerful attributes, such as:
- regenerate and energise the body
- purify and balance energy to bring serenity or passion as needed
- inspire love and devotion
- balance sex drive and alleviate emotional disharmony
- stimulate the metabolism
It’s truly a wonderful gem to add to your collection!
Here is some of my January birthday jewellery:
Onyx and Turquoise are other stones associated with births in early January under the Capricorn zodiac.
Onyx is famously a glorious shiny black stone which is said to give its wearer strength and support, particularly during stressful or difficult circumstances. Turquoise is one of my favourite stones, known for its glorious colour of the same name, has been used to produce jewellery and ornaments for over 6,000 years! It is said to be an efficient healer, bestowing solace for the spirit and well-being for the body, and to provide protection which is why it has been used in amulets throughout history.
